Manningtree Town House RENOVATION

Interior Design - Project Nine

Architect - Roger Balmer Design

This Grade II listed renovation in Manningtree focused on reworking the heart of the home - the kitchen, dining room and adjoining patio - creating a layout better suited to modern family life while remaining deeply respectful of the building’s historic character.

Externally, the relationship between house and garden was transformed through the removal of an existing window and the formation of a new, larger structural opening. Bespoke patio doors, crafted by Ben’s Bespoke, were then installed, opening onto a newly formed patio. This intervention extends the living and dining spaces outdoors, while allowing natural light to flood deep into the interior.

Every decision was made with the Grade II listing in mind - enhancing what was already there, introducing new elements quietly and ensuring the finished spaces feel cohesive, considered and timeless. The result is a home that feels both refreshed and rooted, perfectly adapted for contemporary living while honouring its heritage.

The existing arrangement was carefully reconfigured, with the kitchen relocated into the former dining room and a new dining space established in its place. This shift allowed for improved flow, clearer zoning and a stronger connection between the interior and the garden, without compromising original features.

A Howdens kitchen was specified and elevated with bespoke quartz worktops, balancing practicality with a refined, understated finish. The existing timber floor was carefully refurbished and stained, grounding the space and preserving an important original element of the home. Throughout the project, new electrics were introduced to support both functionality and layered lighting.
