The Cottage
Full Cottage Refurbishment with Eco-Conscious Design by MW Architects.
This thoughtfully restored cottage, led by MW Architects with structural expertise from Stroud Associates, blends historic charm with sustainable, modern living. The project focused on retaining and enhancing original cottage features while upgrading the home to meet contemporary environmental standards.
A highlight of the renovation was the careful restoration of the original timber beams, bringing warmth and authenticity to the interiors. The addition of bespoke joinery, a striking oak staircase, and a slatted timber balustrade adds natural texture and craftsmanship throughout.
Sustainability was at the heart of this transformation. The home now benefits from an air source heat pump, solar panels, and upgraded external walls finished with a high-performance insulated render system. The existing roof tiles were cleaned and reused, and new timber windows and doors were installed throughout to maintain character while improving energy efficiency.
Internally, the cottage features natural cork and quarry tile flooring, alongside the use of water-based, low-VOC paints to ensure a healthy living environment. The custom Pluck kitchen adds playful colour and sustainable materials, while feature glazing by Maxlight opens the space to natural light and garden views.
This full-house refurbishment strikes a balance between tradition and innovation - preserving the soul of the cottage while setting a new standard for eco-conscious design.
